Perched on the top floor of a quiet, sun-drenched apartment block in Dona Paula, this home was originally imagined as a second residence—a seasonal retreat for its well-travelled owners. But as the project unfolded, so did its potential.

Today, it stands not just as a holiday escape, but as one of their most cherished homes, shaped by the easy rhythm of coastal living and layered with memories, materials, and meaning. Designed to reflect the tropical eclecticism that defines Goa, the home is a celebration of contrasts—crafted yet casual, refined yet relaxed. The design team embraced this cultural richness with a language that borrows from across India.

Every corner of the apartment reveals a convergence of textures, materials, and aesthetics, from reclaimed woodwork to artful curios sourced from the clients’ travels. The result is a home that tells stories, not just of the land it's rooted in, but of the people who inhabit it.

The spatial volume plays a starring role, especially in the living and dining areas, where a dramatic pitched roof draws the eye upward. Rather than smooth it out or hide it away, the designers chose to amplify this feature. The ceiling is clad in locally sourced rattan and beams of reclaimed wood—materials that bring in both texture and sustainability, while grounding the space in its Goan context. In the evenings, subtle uplighting transforms this architectural element into a warm, glowing canopy, adding a meditative quality to the space.

The material palette elsewhere is intentionally restrained. Seamless polished concrete floors and lime-plastered walls offer a muted backdrop, allowing art and objects to take centre stage. “We didn’t want the surfaces to compete with the personal collections,”.

“Instead, we created a calm envelope in which their stories could unfold.” True to its coastal setting, the home maintains a strong connection to the outdoors. Each room offers views toward the sea, and furniture layouts are oriented to preserve that openness. There’s a quiet sophistication in the way the indoors dissolve into the natural landscape, blurring lines between the built and the wild.

Yet, it isn’t all minimalism. Pops of colour, bold patterns, and tactile accents make themselves known in every room—each corner expressing its own identity. From layered rugs to hand-painted tiles, the interiors carry the same eclectic vibrancy as the region they inhabit. Much like Goa itself—a meeting point of cultures and histories—the home pulses with layered charm and lived-in warmth.

In the end, this project is less about a grand architectural gesture and more about crafting a feeling—a sense of place, rooted in memory, movement, and the slow beauty of everyday life by the sea
