Defence Colony is dense, and getting denser. Plots sit close, buildings rise tight against their neighbors, and privacy becomes something a house has to actively design for — not something the site offers for free. House with a Metal Veil, a 10,000 sq ft multi-unit residence, takes that constraint head-on rather than retreating from it.

The building houses multiple units across its floors, each needing the same two things a typical dense Delhi plot makes difficult: daylight, and distance from the neighbors' windows a few feet away. The response is a perforated metal screen — vertical bands of pattern-punched metal running across balconies and facade in a rhythm that reads almost textile-like from the street.

The veil does two jobs at once. It screens sightlines into private balconies and living spaces, so residents aren't staring directly into — or being stared at by — the building next door. And it filters direct sun through the day, cutting solar heat gain before it reaches the glazing behind it, without blocking the diffused daylight each unit still needs.

Behind the screen, wood-slat soffits and glass balcony railings keep the material language warm rather than purely industrial — metal doing the hard, functional work of shading and screening, while timber and glass soften the everyday experience of stepping onto a balcony.

Positioned in bands rather than as a single continuous wrap, the veil also breaks up the building's mass, giving each floor its own rhythm rather than reading as one uniform block — useful in a streetscape where most buildings do exactly that.
