Sunstar Forge came to us with a problem that had nothing to do with square footage. Their old office worked, technically — it had cabins, it had a reception, it had all the parts an office is supposed to have. But it looked like it belonged to a different decade, and that was becoming a hiring problem. A metal forging company trying to bring in younger engineers and designers doesn't just need a functioning workspace; it needs one that doesn't make a 25-year-old candidate hesitate at the door.

The brief, once we unpacked it, was really about two shifts happening at once. The first was cultural: moving from a hierarchical layout — cabins for seniority, open floor for everyone else — to something flatter, where proximity wasn't a marker of rank. The second was spatial: an 8,000 sq ft shell that was raw, industrial, largely untreated, and needed to stay that way in spirit even as it became more refined in execution.

We didn't fight the shell — we designed with it. Exposed structure stayed exposed. What we added was metal, deliberately, everywhere it made sense: not as decoration, but as the material Sunstar Forge actually works with every day. It's in partitions, in furniture detailing, in finishes that reference the forge floor without literally recreating it. The company's identity isn't printed on a wall here — it's built into the fabric of the space.

The open-plan shift mattered just as much as the material story. Removing hierarchy from the floor plan is easy to say and harder to execute — it means rethinking where leadership sits, how meetings happen, and what "status" looks like when it's no longer a corner cabin. For Sunstar Forge, that translated into a workspace their newest hires walk into and immediately understand: this is a company that makes things, and isn't afraid to look like one — just better.
